From an American standpoint - it seems to me that there is no real reason to
discontinue the use of Uyghur script. It may be slightly more difficult to
create programs in Uyghur, but still far from impossible. Someone wrote (I
am not sure who) that the script contains only 32 letters/characters. Even
if it is written from right to left, 32 characters is nothing difficult to
handle. The <shift> key may be a little inconvenient, but who really
cares?
However, having said that, I don't think that teaching / learning / using a
romanized alphabet would be harmful if applied correctly. It would
probably be very useful for Uyghurs without the proper software to write in
Uyghur
(usually an "IME," or Input Method Editor).
Question - is the government "suggesting" a romanized
alphabet, or "enforcing" it?
