China to Put American Green Card Holder on Secret Trial -Hong Kong,
Nov. 20 (CNA) A Chinese-born American green card holder will be put on a
secret trial in Beijing on Nov. 23 on charges of "gathering
intelligence for foreign organizations," a human rights group said here
Monday. The Hong Kong-based Information Center for Human Rights and
Democracy said
Teng Chunyan, 37, is a practitioner of Falun Gong. She was arrested in
China in March and indicted last month by the first
branch office of the Beijing Municipal People's Procuratorate. The
information center said she was accused of gathering "intelligence"
for
foreign organizations, only because she gathered information on Chinese
persecution of the Falun Gong sect and sent it overseas. The Chinese
government outlawed Falun Gong and other spiritual movements as "evil
cults"
last year. The Chinese authorities have not notified the American Embassy
and her
American husband of her arrest, the information center said, adding that
only her lawyers will be allowed to attend the secret trial.
