Basin

Washington, Feb. 14,
(UIA) -- An oil company from China's eastern Henan province, hoping to
drill in oil- rich "Xinjiang", is planning to explore the Tarim Basin,
China's state media reported Wednesday. According to
China News Service report, Henan Oil Company will soon set up a team of oil
experts and send
it to Bugur (Qiemo) county at Bayinghulin Mongol Prefecture for oil
exploration. Henan Oil Company is hoping to drill the first oil well in the next
half of this year, the report said. Oil is considered as one of the
strategic resources in China. Oil has been under tight government control. The
oil industry in "Xinjiang" has been run by China National
Petroleum Corps (CNPC) in the past. However, in recent years, the Chinese
government allowed oil companies from other provinces to explore oil in
"Xinjiang" in order to accelerate the production and meet the demand.
Henan Oil Company, in order to start exploration as early as possible, has
already shipped a drilling equipment worth more than 70 million yuan [roughly
8.3 U.S. dollars] to "Xinjiang", the report said. Oil company
officials met with Badai, the head of Bayinghulin Mongol Prefecture, and Tao
Jianxin, the deputy secretary of the prefecture as well as high- ranking
officials from Bugur County, the report said. Both sides expressed the
desire to cooperate in oil exploration in the region, the report said.
Since China launched the Western Development Project last year, many Chinese oil
companies, bringing their own work force from their respective provinces,
crammed into "Xinjiang" for oil exploration and production. These oil
companies under the pretext of language
barrier don't hire local people in oil exploration and production.
