China Publishes A Dictionary of Sinified Uyghur Names

Washington, Jan. 22 (UIA) -- "A Dictionary of Sinified
Uyghur Names" has recently been published in Urumchi by
an Uyghur professor who wanted to standardize the
Uyghur names in written Chinese language, China's state
media reported on Sunday.

Muhammed Hashim, an Uyghur scholar who holds a
doctorate degree in "Xinjiang University", has
published this dictionary after collecting and
compiling the Uyghur names and transliterated them into
Chinese, China News Service said.

According to the report, this new dictionary filled the
blank in standardizing the Uyghur names written in
Chinese language. This dictionary will be used as the
basis to spell Uyghur names in Chinese, the report
said.

In official documents, China doesn’t recognize the
spelling of Uyghur names spelled in Arabic Uyghur
Script or Romanized Uyghur Script but only the
transliterated (or sinified) Uyghur names in Chinese
language. All the Uyghur names on Chinese passport are
sinified, showing absolute no respect to the
originality of the Uyghur names.

The Uyghur communities around the world repeatedly
demanded the "Xinjiang" Uyghur Autonomous Regional
government to consider using both Uyghur and Chinese
spelling of Uyghur names on the passport. However, the
regional government disregarded the appropriate demand
and offered no official response.
