Professors Favor the Reincarnation of Romanized Uyghur  Script  Washington, January 12 (UIA) -- One Uyghur and one
Chinese professor suggested to reincarnate the   Romanized Uyghur Script for the Uyghurs in order to be  in line with the usage of computer language, China's
state media reported on Thursday.  According to China News Service report, Bawurjan   Hajibek, assistant professor of economic management   department at "Xinjiang" University, and Wudi, dean of  Chinese language at Shihezi University, recommended to  readopt the Romanized Uyghur Script at "Xinjiang"  Political Consultative Conference held in Urumchi this  week.  These two professors said the Romanized Uyghur Script   is extremely convenient and user-friendly on the  computers and related departments should consider  readopting the Romanized Uyghur Script based on the Old  (Arabic) Uyghur Script, according to the report.  The current Uyghur script is based on Arabic script  while the new Uyghur script is based on the Romanized  characters. The Old Uyghur Script is written from right   to left and the Romanized Uyghur Script is written from  left to right. The Arabic Uyghur Script has been used  since 11th century when the majority of the  Uyghurs  were converted into Islam.  In early 1960s, the Uyghurs changed their  Arabic script   into Romanized script  following China's call for  development. However, Chinese government abolished the  usage of the Romanized Uyghur Script without formal   explanation in early 1980s.  According to the professors, the current Old Uyghur   Script is not suitable for computerized language, which  makes the production of Uyghur language software  extremely difficult. But on the other hand, the  Romanized Uyghur Script is just perfect to make Uyghur   language software.   The Uyghurs have mixed feelings on readopting the   Romanized Uyghur Script. Some Uyghurs believe that the   Romanized script is indeed good for computer and   science while some believe it is Chinese government's  second attempt to leave another generation of Uyghurs  illiterate.  One professor said 21st century is an information age  and therefore the  Uyghurs should readopt the Romanized   Uyghur Script following the demand of the times, the  report said.                    http://www.uyghurinfo.com
