14. Kuresh, the National Hero, is alive in the hearts of the people of Hotan.
The local people of Eastern Turkestan call all those who fought against Chinese authorities and were announced to be the "enemies" of the Chinese Government the "National Heroes"; their names became popular among the people, which composed the ballads about them. This demonstrates that the Communist Rule has been shaken in Eastern Turkestan and the Uygur people have united ideologically against the Chinese authorities. In the 13th paragraph of his secret report the Secretary of so called "Autonomous region" Wang Lequan discussed that the local people were calling the late Kuresh, the leader of the anti-Chinese forces in Hotan region, "our beloved brother and national hero", that it was necessary to do everything to delete Kuresh from the hearts of the people. He told in this case: "we must annihilate bad people undertaking separatist actions and threatening the State security and make them to be not able to rise again, we determined the crimes committed by Kuresh after having exposed his group. From the criminal point of view Kuresh is a leader of criminals, though he did not do many things by himself, but he must be regarded as a leader of the crimes and disasters, so we must expose him well, we should fight and through fighting blacken him, so that nobody will call him "beloved brother and national hero". Having systemized his criminal deeds we should shoot him living in the hearts of the people". Dear compatriots, the words of Wang Lequan clearly describe the Chinese rule as merciless and sinister. The Chinese government having killed an Uygur patriot Kuresh is trying now to blacken his honest name and delete his spirit living in the hearts of the Hotan's people. However the Chinese authorities have forgotten that the pure gold can never been rotted, and the name of someone who is alive in the minds of the people can never been deleted. Actually by blackening his name the Chinese authorities is getting opposite results, instead being forgotten the National heroes are getting more and more popular, so the Chinese Communist party is digging its own grave!
Dear compatriots, as you know, the leader of the anti-Chinese ethnic forces in Hotan region Kuresh was hiding in one of the houses in Hotan when on September, 1998 the Chinese policemen have exposed his place and surrounded him in the house #102 near the yard of the Hotel. When the police pursued him to surrender, this brave young man answered by shooting from his pistol, and himself could resist to some 100 policemen within 15 minutes, then the Chinese forces used a tear-gas bomb, and attacked his place. At that time this brave young man has shot the first policeman that entered his house, this person was Tursun Tohti. Finally policemen decided to open squall fire on him, during the attack Kuresh has been shot. That time the Chinese press gave detailed information on that incident. According to the secret document #43 distributed by the Party Committee of the town of Hotan, the real name of the person who became known as "Kuresh" was Abdurehim Mamut and he was from Laskuy village of Hotan town. As it was informed in this document, in the beginning of 1998 two young Uygurs came from abroad Osman Mijit and Memet Rahman together with another young Uygur Abdusalam have organized the anti-Chinese underground organization and started anti-Chinese activities, but soon Osman Mijit and Memet Rahman have been exposed and arrested by Chinese police. Fortunately the third of them Abdusalam survived; he made contacts with Memet Abliz and Kuresh in Hotan and made efforts to restore the organization's activities. At that moment he was also exposed and fell death in the clash with policemen; Memet Ablis was also detained. Kuresh, the only person survived, did not hesitate, and continued underground activities moving from one place to another in Eastern Turkestan and being able to strengthen the organization trough forming its branches in Urumchi, Turpan, Ili, Aqsu, Kashgar, Hotan districts. In middle of 1998 Kuresh returned to Hotan and with Shireli who was leading the local branch of the underground organization began to struggle against Chinese authorities. According to the document issued by the "Party Committee of the town of Hotan", Kuresh and Shireli have gathered more than 200 members in Hotan and taught 180 of them how to make hand bombs and made 2700 hand bombs. Though Kuresh was preparing to begin uprising simultaneously in 6 districts – in Urumchi, Turpan, Guljia, Aksu, Kashgar and Hotan, unfortunately the branches of the organization in other regions were exposed and the members were arrested, so Kuresh and Sherili had to begin armed resistance themselves in Hotan in the end of July 1998. After Kuresh had been killed on September 9, 1998 Sherili, who is still struggling together with his fellows in Hotan district, led the uprising. According to the report of Wang Lequan, there is now another group of insurgents in Kashgar led by Yasin Memet who iacts in close contact with Sherili of Hotan. At the same time, our informants from Eastern Turkestan report that such armed clashes occur in other places like Aksu, Ili and Urumchi. All documents from Eastern Turkestan obtained show that the anti-Chinese armed fights at present cover all Eastern Turkestan. The armed fights in Hotan region is to be known as the most serious and the most organized in Eastern Turkestan over last decade, because since the middle of the last year the Chinese government were not able to get success even throwing all financial resources to suppress the uprising, which spread over other parts of Eastern Turkestan. On the other hand the Wang Lequan's report as well as the secret document #43 confirms that a lot of young Uygurs in Eastern Turkestan sacrifice their lives to anti-Chinese struggle, and when one leader is killed other comes up to lead the fight. For instance, when Abdusalam, the first leader of the Hotan resistance, has been killed, Kuresh led the fighters, when Kuresh is dead Shireli becomes a person at the head of the movement. Though this organization has been destroyed its leader is still acting against Chinese government without any hesitation. The courage, audacity of the young Uygurs course trouble to the Chinese colonial rule in Eastern Turkestan, and encourage the Uygur people, which regard them as their National Heroes. So, the poor Wang Lequan's call to kill that Kuresh living in the hearts of the Uygur people, means that the Chinese Communist authorities do not have any other ways to fight with the indigenous people of Eastern Turkestan than that of fighting against the late Kuresh image in the minds of the people!
